Friends of Liberia
This year Friends of Liberia made the transition into its own independent incorporation and Hampden Academy graduates are organizing another trip to Liberia this time to the interior village of Weajue. Weajue is a village of about 3,000 people that has no electricity, health services, waste disposal system, and because they have no proper ways of disposing of waste they also have no clean drinking water. This coming summer Andrew Deighan, Shaylah Goss, and Sean Higgins, all three former students of Hampden Academy, will travel to Weajue, Liberia to develop a clean drinking water supply, a composting toilet system, and start a health clinic for the village.
Friends of Liberia has laid out plans to establish a community organization in Weajue and an endowment fund to maintain and improve the projects which will be developed in the summer of 2009. Follow up missions will also be made in the coming years to further assist Weajue and Liberia at large.
Hopefully through the efforts of these students and the increasing involvement at Hampden Academy, we can become more involved in learning about and supporting third-world countries including the Republic of Liberia.
